Golden Waterfall’s distinct color and name come from the metals in the tailings left over from the old gold mine that used to operate in the area. These metals are toxic, making Golden Waterfall a beautiful but sad reminder of Taiwan’s pollution problem.
Jiufen used to be the center of gold mining. In 1890, someone struck gold near Jiufen. The poor village with only 9 families soon attracted prospectors of 4,000 families. However, with the decline of gold mining activities, Jiufen fades.
